Club History
Blidworth Welfare Football Club was formed in 1926 under the title of Folk House Old Boys
Football Club.
They changed their name to Blidworth Welfare in 1982 and for season 1982/1983 they became
founders of the newly formed Northern Counties East League – a competition founded from the
merging of the old Midland Counties League and the Yorkshire Leagues.
They joined Division One South of this league when it was reorganised for the 1984/1985 season,
and twelve months later when there was further reorganisation they became founder members of
the new Division Three.
In season 1986/1987 they left to join the Central Midlands League and started life in that
combination in the Premier Division, eventually winning promotion to the Supreme Division in
1990.
They were promoted back to the Northern Counties East League for season 1994/1995 and
competed in Division One but were relegated back to the Central Midlands League Supreme
Division after finishing bottom of Division One at the end of season 1997/1998.
In 2007, under the management of Dave Hughes, the club won the Nottinghamshire Intermediate
Cup.
They were subsequently relegated to the Central Midlands Premier Division in 1999 where they
currently remain, but the club have the facilities to play at a much higher level.
In 2007, under the management of Dave Hughes, the club won the Nottinghamshire Intermediate
Cup.
In 2008, again under the management of Dave Hughes the club reached the final of the Quartet
League Cup where they were unfortunate to lose 1-0 in extra time to Dunkirk of the Supreme
Division. This defeat followed an extraordinary Cup run when Blidworth beat holders Heanor
Town, leaders and champions elect Askern Welfare, plus Holbrook Miners Welfare in the semis,
all of the Supreme Division.
Dave Hughes resigned before the start of the 2008-09 season after his brother Rob was attacked
whilst on holiday in Crete. The Manager felt he could not continue whilst his brother was in a
serious medical condition in hospital. This resulted in Chairman Alan Whitworth appointing
Management duo of Kevin Chappell and Keith Easom assisted by ex player Simon Ward. The
pair had previously worked together at Shirebrook Town looking after the Reserve and A sides.
Easom had been a player at Shirebrook whilst Chappell had experienced Management at
Worksop Town, Matlock Town and United, and had been assistant to Rudy Funk during his days
in charge at Blidworth. The club appointed Graeme Rodgers and Chris Bullock to manage the
Reserves side that play in the Supreme Reserves Division of the Central Midlands League. The
first team had to manage without Kev Chappell during the second part of the season as ill health
forced him to leave his role at the club. Keith Easom ran the first team virtually single-handed
and managed to keep Blidworth in the Supreme Division finishing in a very respectable 14th
position. The reserves played in a step 6 league and managed to finish in tenth spot, which was a
very creditable result.
The start of season 2009-2010 saw Keith Easom promote Chris Bullock to join him with the first
team and Graeme Rodger was left to run the reserves. The season also saw the start of an under
19’s side for the first time at Blidworth playing in Division 3 of the North Midlands League. Stan
Matthews was appointed as the under 19’s manager assisted by Chris Bullock. Matthews is a
qualified Level 2 coach and has spent a lot of his career coaching teams at Shirebrook Rangers.
Most of his players graduated from the under 18 side he had run at Shirebrook.
The start of season 2009-10 saw the removal of the wooden hut tea bar at Blidworth’s ground that
had been in place for a long time. The club managed to purchase a redundant porta cabin which
they have developed into a more state of the arts tea bar.
